The Only Vertical-Lift Bridge in North Carolina

Completed in 1969, the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge is significant as the only known vertical-lift bridge in North Carolina. The towers rise 160 feet above the river, and the lift span measures 408 feet long. When a ship needs to pass, the entire lift span rises vertically between the two towers — a mechanical operation that's increasingly rare as modern bridges favor fixed spans or cable-stayed designs.

For over 50 years, this bridge has been the only connection on the south side of downtown Wilmington, carrying traffic across the river between the two counties. It's a familiar landmark to anyone who lives in or visits the Cape Fear region.
